The original 24 was the perfect pop blend of post-911 politics and the modern bare-knuckle spy genre, and for awhile, it was the best action show on TV. The problem was that it went on a little too long and began to feel somewhat like a parody of itself. Kiefer Sutherland as the invincible Jack Bauer was his own personal deus ex machina, and the last few seasons began to feel like they were writing action set pieces for Batman.
24 Legacy was announced in 2015 as a mildly related spin-off of the core show, and although Jack is nowhere to be seen (Sutherland was too busy playing POTUS in Designated Survivor), the twisty writing is relatively unchanged. Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) stars as ex-Ranger Eric Carter, and although he is not as perpetually angry as Sutherland, he seems every bit as intense.
Plot-wise the show continues to be double-crosses and triple-crosses, and the CTU once again proves to be the least safe venue from which to be fighting terrorism. The terrorists are numerous, the conspiracies are far-reaching, and the major kills are all quite creative.
In other words, it feels like it’s 2001 again.
